An important part of Preddvor’s beekeeping history is represented by Kokl Beekeeping in Potoče near Preddvor, which is currently run by Tomaž and Anastazija Kokl. The Kokl family is considered one of the pioneers of Slovenian apiturism.
In the Kokra River valley, just a few minutes from Preddvor toward Jezersko, Kokl Beekeeping is located on a farmstead surrounded by meadows and forests. The Kokl family is considered one of the pioneers of Slovenian apitourism. Visitors are first greeted by a modern educational apiary, built in 2000 to promote Slovenian beekeeping both at home and abroad. This is where a special experience begins, taking visitors into the world of the Carniolan honeybee, the life of bees, and the work of a beekeeper.
Guests first enjoy a warm welcome and a tasting of delicacies from the beehive, followed by a guided tour of the apiary. In a special beekeeping room, they learn about the history of beekeeping, different types of honey, and bee products for which the Kokl Apiary has received numerous domestic and international awards. Of particular interest is the tour of the glass-enclosed hive, where visitors can observe the bees up close.
The program also includes a tour of the garden of honey plants, a presentation on the production of honey, beeswax, and propolis, as well as various hands-on workshops, including making beeswax candles and painting hive panels. Tours are tailored to professional groups, schools, and tourists, as well as business visitors and families; another unique feature of the farm is its accessibility for visitors with mobility impairments.
The estate also features a small beekeeping museum and a pleasant area for socializing and picnics along the Kokra River, where visitors can experience the close connection between beekeeping, nature, and local traditions. In 2013, they received the Apiturizem Certificate of Excellence for the quality of their programs.
